About Us

We are faithful, friendly, followers of Christ, seeking to:

Share God's love, Embrace our neighbors, Nurture each other.

We share God’s love with a BIG friendly welcome whenever we gather as the body of Christ for spirit-filled Worship, Coffee Hour, Fellowship, Study, and Outreach to the Community.

We embrace our neighbors by reaching out to the community in service through the Middletown Area Mission Action (MAMA), gathering snacks and clinic supplies for Middletown Elementary School, and organizing food collections for those in need.

We nurture each other by engaging in study through Faith Formation on Sunday mornings, bible studies, and other small group gatherings.

History

Middletown Presbyterian Church was organized in 1878 as Cedar Cliff Presbyterian Church. At that time we were located on the Valley Pike between Stephens City and Middletown on Vaucluse Road. In December 1985 we moved to a new location in the town of Middletown and on March 22, 1987 we changed our name to Middletown Presbyterian Church. In 1997 a dream came into reality as we built a new sanctuary. We also refurbished our old Sunday School building, paved the parking lot, and updated the landscaping. Through these updates we were also able to make our facility fully accessible to the physically disabled.

Cedar Creek Chapel

Cedar Creek Presbyterian Church was founded in 1732 and has the distinction of being the oldest church in Frederick County, Virginia and one of the oldest in our country. The church building has burned due to fire several times, but the current building located on Middle Road was dedicated on July 28, 1876. Membership at Cedar Creek dwindled in recent years and the church eventually merged with Middletown Presbyterian Church. Regular worship services are no longer held at the Chapel, but the legacy lives on through various special events.

The Presbyterian Parish of the Valleys

In 1984 it became apparent that several smaller rural churches in Virginia and West Virginia were facing significant challenges and fighting for survival. Under the leadership of Rev. James Gutherie (pastor of Burnt Church), a Parish Council was formed to develop a cooperative ministry and ensure survival. The Parish of the Valleys began with seven churches and expanded to eight in 1989. Middletown Presbyterian Church (formerly Cedar Cliff Presbyterian Church) Cedar Creek Presbyterian Church Second Opequon Presbyterian Church Round Hill Presbyterian Church Ivanhoe Presbyterian Church Wardensville Presbyterian Church Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church Clear Brook Presbyterian Church These eight churches shared pastoral leadership, ministry, and mission. The model created a strong nucleus that worked well for many years. Eventually, the model of a Parish ran it’s course and it was dissolved. After several years of discernment, Middletown Presbyterian Church decided to take a great leap of faith by calling their first ever full-time installed pastor in Rev. Kevin Hay who began in ministry with Middletown in September of 2019.
